ALBUM // Ichisan & Nakova – Yugo Tempo

Certain sub-genres become more endearing as they grow more specific and quirky. Listening to “Yugo Tempo,” I would have to include space disco among them. The field has generally been dominated by Scandinavian (Norwegian and Danish, especially) artists such as Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje and Trentemøller. Ichisan & Nakova hail from Slovenia, and they filter their 4/4’s through the prism of Yugoslavian nostalgia, incorporating elements of the 70s and 80s under Tito, having sampling the theme song of a late-70’s Yugoslav television show. On their 2010 full length, Yugo Tempo, they mix in elements of 70s soundtrack funk and ethnic pop, but usually their new sub-genre of “Yugo Disco” sticks to the space disco formula, as on the excellent lead track, “Pionir,” named after the Yugoslav Communist youth movement.

Yugo Tempor is out on Nang Records.
